VCUarts sophomore Sirena Pearl has been named the winner of The Science Coalition’s Fund It Forward Student Video Challenge. In her video, Pearl focused on the urban heat island effect, a pressing environmental issue that highlights the acceleration of climate change. She explained, “Asphalt in urban areas increases temperatures locally creating a much hotter environment than suburban and rural areas that hold more vegetation.”
Pearl’s winning video impressed the judges with its creativity and innovation. As a result, she received funding from VCU’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program to create a large-scale mural on campus that visually represents the urban heat island effect. The mural features two opposing figures, symbolizing the community’s role in either contributing to the solution or the problem. One figure represents a sustainable city, painted with solar-reflective materials, while the other figure, representing the urban heat island, is shown sweating and in pain, painted with heat-absorbing reflective materials. A thermal infrared camera captures the temperature differences, providing a tangible representation of the issue.
VCU President Michael Rao, Ph.D., expressed his pride in Pearl’s work, stating, “VCU is exceptionally proud of Sirena and her truly innovative cross-disciplinary work melding art and science. By helping diverse audiences understand complex issues that impact us all, her work speaks to VCU’s mission as a public research university dedicated to advancing the human condition and pursuing discoveries that make a difference in our communities.”
The Science Coalition, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization representing more than 50 public and private research universities, established the Fund It Forward Student Video Challenge to advocate for federal investment in basic scientific research. Pearl emphasized the importance of federal support for fundamental research in addressing complex environmental risks, stating, “Federal support for fundamental research provides opportunities to collect and share vital data that we will need to solve and communicate these complex environmental risks.”
Pearl’s achievement highlights the power of art in raising awareness about critical issues such as climate change. Through her mural, she aims to share solutions to the urban heat island effect with global communities experiencing similar risks. “This visual access to knowledge can share solutions in accessible format to global communities experiencing the risks associated with the urban heat island effect,” Pearl explained.
