The University of Rochester saw a vibrant array of activities and events in March 2024, captured in a series of captivating photos by J. Adam Fenster. From academic pursuits to cultural performances, the month was filled with diverse experiences for students and faculty alike.

In the Mary Ann Mavrinac Studio X in Carlson Library, a student was immersed in virtual reality, showcasing the integration of technology into educational settings. Meanwhile, visiting assistant professor Dmitry Bykov engaged students with recordings of Russian prison songs, shedding light on the culture of incarceration in Russia.

In a display of scientific exploration, J. Lyse Mugeni, a third-year optical engineering PhD student, conducted tests on eclipse glasses material, highlighting the innovative research happening at the university. Simultaneously, members of UR Celtic, McKenna Young ’26, Grace Van Der Meer ’25, and Nora Rooney ’25, prepared for a performance at the American College Dance Association Northeast Conference.

Rare eclipse-related books in Rush Rhees Library’s Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation showcased the historical significance of the university’s collection. The anticipation was palpable as fourth-year students at the School of Medicine and Dentistry eagerly awaited Match Day to discover their residency placements.

University President Sarah C. Mangelsdorf’s presence at the announcement of the Rochester International Jazz Festival lineup added a touch of prestige to the event. Meanwhile, Elia Cuautle ’24 found tranquility walking the labyrinth during the Flourish Festival at the Goergen Athletic Center.

Adarsh Mavathaveedu ’24, Smit Kothari ’25, Keira Donnelly ’26, and Hana Zhang ’26 facilitated an advising session for Project Level the Field, demonstrating the university’s commitment to supporting Rochester City School District students in their college application process. Baitullah Hameedi, a visiting scholar at the Susan B. Anthony Center, brought a global perspective to the campus community.

As the month came to a close, students casually strolled through Hajim Quad on the River Campus, enjoying a warm afternoon. The photos captured throughout March 2024 at the University of Rochester serve as a testament to the vibrant and engaging environment that defines the institution.

Three first-year University of Rochester students, Asad Shahab, Adam Bowen, and Michael Koomson, are set to help NASA study the sun’s corona as a total solar eclipse passes over Rochester, New York on April 8.
