The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced that the United States is withdrawing from the Green Climate Fund (GCF), with immediate effect. This move aligns with the Trump Administration’s earlier decision to exit the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The Treasury has informed the GCF of this withdrawal and will also vacate its seat on the GCF Board.
U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent stated, “Our nation will no longer fund radical organizations like the GCF whose goals run contrary to the fact that affordable, reliable energy is fundamental to economic growth and poverty reduction.”
The administration emphasized its focus on supporting all forms of affordable and reliable energy as essential for economic development and reducing poverty. The GCF was originally created to help fulfill objectives set by the UNFCCC, but continued involvement with the fund is now seen as inconsistent with current U.S. policy priorities.
