IBM and Unipol Assicurazioni have announced the continuation of their partnership to advance Unipol’s digital transformation. The collaboration, which began over a year ago, has focused on adopting hybrid cloud solutions and strengthening IT infrastructure with IBM’s z17 technology. This initiative also includes expanding artificial intelligence capabilities directly onto production mainframe data.
Unipol’s IT division has used IBM’s next-generation mainframe and storage technologies in combination with hybrid multi-cloud platforms such as Red Hat OpenShift. This approach has enabled the company to better address customer needs and launch an automation project powered by watsonx, IBM’s suite for traditional and generative AI.
The new platform developed by Unipol, called NAMI, is designed to modernize IT operations management. Operating within Unipol’s on-premises infrastructure, NAMI combines the security of on-premise systems with the scalability of cloud computing. IBM watsonx was selected for its open architecture, which allows integration with Red Hat OpenShift and compatibility with existing tools like Ansible. It also provides access to a library of foundation models for selecting optimal solutions for various use cases while managing resources and costs efficiently.
NAMI was initially trained using IBM Cloud but later migrated on-premises to enhance data security and governance. This hybrid model enables Unipol to maintain agile development processes while ensuring performance and strict control over sensitive information.
According to Unipol Assicurazioni’s IT department, these changes have led to significant improvements in operational efficiency, including a 90% reduction in incident handling time and faster data analysis by technical teams.
“This project is the outcome of close collaboration with IBM, marking a significant step toward our vision of a modern, scalable IT infrastructure that quickly and flexibly responds to business demands,” said Mario Bocca CIO of Unipol. “Our hybrid infrastructure has empowered NAMI and will eventually enable us to create an AI ecosystem available not only for IT operations but also for the rest of the company.”
“Unipol’s strategic growth and modernization journey has effectively leveraged the hybrid cloud by design approach with AI-powered automation features,” said Nico Losito, Vice President of IBM Technology Italy. “IBM will continue to collaborate with Unipol to enhance and expand NAMI’s functionalities based on watsonx and to continue our shared path of innovation. This is a crucial milestone for the Italian market, showcasing how an advanced hybrid cloud infrastructure can enable enterprise AI solutions to gain a competitive sector advantage.”
