Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent met with Canadian Minister of Finance and National Revenue Francois-Philippe Champagne last week in Washington. The meeting focused on U.S. trade concerns, including imbalances in auto trade between the two countries.

During the meeting, Secretary Bessent encouraged Canada to address these trade issues. He also discussed the Administration’s expectation that Canada, together with Europe and the UK, will work to increase economic pressure on Russia through coordinated G7 actions.

Bessent highlighted the need for a unified response among allies regarding China’s global rare earth export controls. He also stressed the importance of creating diversified supply chains.

“The Secretary also emphasized the need for a unified response towards China’s global rare earth export controls, and the importance of diversified supply chains,” according to the official readout.

The discussion reflects ongoing efforts between the United States and its partners to address shared economic and security challenges.
