U.S. and Vietnam officials initiate trade discussions following key meeting

U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott K. H. Bessent met with Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc in Washington. The meeting followed Deputy Prime Minister Phoc’s earlier discussions with United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

During their meeting, Secretary Bessent and Deputy Prime Minister Phoc agreed to initiate formal discussions focused on reciprocal trade between the United States and Vietnam. The conversation highlighted the significance of maintaining active engagement with trade partners. Secretary Bessent stressed the necessity for swift and tangible progress in addressing unresolved issues in their trade relationship.

“Today, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Scott K.H. Bessent with Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc of Vietnam,” reads the press release. “Following the Deputy Prime Minister’s meeting with United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, the Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister agreed to begin formal discussions on reciprocal trade between the United States and Vietnam,” it continued. Bessent also stated, “During their talks, Secretary Bessent emphasized the importance of continued engagement with trade partners, and the need for quick, demonstrable progress to resolve outstanding issues.”

The discussions underscore the ongoing effort to strengthen U.S.-Vietnam economic relations through bilateral trade engagements.
