Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent met with Italian Minister of Economy and Finance Giancarlo Giorgetti on Apr. 16 to discuss a range of international economic topics, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

The meeting focused on the global economic environment, energy matters, and ongoing concerns related to the Iran conflict. The two officials also addressed cooperation between the United States and Italy regarding critical minerals.

During their conversation, Bessent reiterated “the Trump Administration’s continued opposition to Italy’s Digital Service Tax, as well as aggressive tax enforcement actions being taken against foreign companies.” He also expressed satisfaction in engaging with Giorgetti on critical minerals cooperation between both countries.

The discussion highlights ongoing diplomatic efforts between the United States and Italy on important financial policies and international trade practices. These talks are part of broader discussions among allied nations about tax policy, energy security, and supply chain resilience for essential resources such as critical minerals.

Further developments in U.S.-Italy relations may follow as both governments continue negotiations over digital taxation and cross-border economic cooperation.
