Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent met with Japanese Minister of Finance Satsuki Katayama on April 16 in Washington. During their meeting, Bessent thanked Katayama for Japan’s leadership on energy and financial issues.
The discussion highlighted the ongoing cooperation between the United States and Japan, emphasizing the importance of their alliance. The talks come after Prime Minister Takaichi’s recent visit to the United States, which Bessent described as successful. He reaffirmed a commitment to maintain close communications between both countries.
Bessent also referenced Assistant Secretary for Investment Security Chris Pilkerton’s recent engagements in Japan related to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). He pledged strong support from the Treasury Department as Japan considers developing its own investment screening mechanism.
The meeting underlines continued collaboration between two major economies as they address shared challenges in energy policy and financial security. The development of an investment screening process by Japan may further strengthen economic ties and mutual understanding going forward.
