Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent met with Valdis Dombrovskis, the European Commission’s Commissioner for Economy & Productivity and Commissioner for Implementation & Simplification, in Washington last week.

During their meeting, Secretary Bessent reaffirmed President Trump’s focus on achieving a ceasefire and a lasting peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. Bessent highlighted the importance of Europe taking a proactive stance on increasing G7 economic pressure against Russia. He also stressed the necessity of a unified approach to China’s global rare earth export controls and discussed the significance of having diversified supply chains.

“The Secretary underscored the need for Europe to be proactive on increased G7 economic pressure against Russia. The Secretary also emphasized the need for a unified response towards China’s global rare earth export controls, and the importance of diversified supply chains,” according to the readout.
