Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent met with Japan’s Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama on January 12 in Washington. During the meeting, Secretary Bessent expressed his gratitude to Minister Katayama for participating in the United States’ critical minerals summit and highlighted the importance of maintaining sovereignty over critical minerals among democratic countries.

Bessent also reiterated his confidence in the alliance between the United States and Japan, acknowledging Japan’s active role in discussions related to the OECD global minimum tax. He stated, “Noting the inherent undesirability of excess exchange rate volatility, the Secretary also emphasized the need for sound formulation and communication of monetary policy.”

The discussion reflects ongoing cooperation between both nations on economic issues, including tax policy and financial stability.
