IBM has announced a new multi-year partnership with Mission 44, the charitable foundation established by Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton. The collaboration aims to promote technology education and career opportunities for young people, focusing on skills in artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, data analytics, and cybersecurity.
The initiative will use IBM’s free education platform, IBM SkillsBuild, to deliver learning experiences designed to increase interest in STEM fields and motorsports. According to recent findings from the AI Workforce Consortium, roles related to AI are now essential for growth across G7 countries, making AI a core skill rather than a specialized area.
Lewis Hamilton, founder of Mission 44, said: "Talent is everywhere, but not everyone is afforded the opportunity for career growth. That's why Mission 44 is teaming up with IBM SkillsBuild to unlock new learning pathways in technology for young people everywhere. We're on a mission to ensure young people get the chance to thrive, so that everyone can fulfill their potential."
Mission 44 and IBM plan to organize events at Formula 1 races each year, offering students hands-on activities aimed at preparing them for future jobs in F1 host countries. The partnership is also expected to help make STEM fields more inclusive and expand access to technical education through Mission 44’s network of partners.
Justina Nixon-Saintil, Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility and Chief Impact Officer at IBM, stated: "We're investing in the technical skills that will shape future workforces, fuel open innovation and drive economic growth. The partnership between IBM SkillsBuild and Mission 44 brings together our collective strengths; expanding access to vital skills and tools, and enabling students to succeed in the AI economy."
Jason Arthur, CEO of Mission 44, added: "At Mission 44, we know collaboration is key to creating lasting impact, and our partnership with IBM is a powerful example of that. By uniting with IBM SkillsBuild we have the opportunity to drive meaningful impact for young people globally, raising aspirations and achievement, and unlocking access to exciting careers in STEM and motorsport."
The first joint event will be held at Circuit of the Americas in Austin before the 2025 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix. Activities will include a pit crew simulation exercise for students as well as a tour of the Scuderia Ferrari HP Team garage.
Mission 44 was founded by Lewis Hamilton with the goal of supporting youth access to STEM careers. IBM is recognized globally for its expertise in hybrid cloud services, AI solutions, consulting services, and support for digital transformation across industries including finance, telecommunications, and healthcare.
