U.S. and Mexican officials meet for 20th banking dialogue focused on combating illicit finance

Senior officials from the U.S. Department of the Treasury and Mexico’s Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público held the 20th U.S.-Mexico Banking Dialogue (UMBD) on September 8–9 in Washington. The meeting brought together representatives from both countries’ public and private sectors.

The focus of this year’s dialogue was to strengthen joint efforts against illicit financial activities linked to Mexico-based drug trafficking organizations (DTOs). According to organizers, this aligns with President Trump’s directive to address the threat posed by these groups.

Participants discussed ways for both governments and financial institutions to better disrupt networks that enable DTOs. The event also highlighted the ongoing partnership between the United States and Mexico in protecting their financial systems from cross-border criminal activity.

"The event reinforced the close and longstanding partnership between the United States and Mexico to safeguard our financial systems from cross-border illicit finance threats," according to a statement released following the meeting.
