UC Berkeley partners with Bear Republic Brewing for official craft beer launch

UC Berkeley has announced a partnership with Bear Republic Brewing Co., naming the company as the “Official Craft Beer of Cal.” The agreement includes the launch of “Oski’s California Gold,” a co-branded light golden ale that will be available at California Memorial Stadium and in local supermarkets starting this fall.

The university’s Business Partnerships & Services office stated that revenue from this collaboration will go toward supporting campus programs and priorities. The initiative also aims to strengthen connections between alumni, fans, and the university.

John Martin, co-owner of West Coast Craft, which owns Bear Republic Brewing and Drake’s Brewing, commented on his family’s long-standing relationship with UC Berkeley: “My family’s connection to Cal spans more than a century — from our roots in Berkeley to operating the Bear’s Lair Pub and supporting Cal Athletics for years. Now, creating Oski’s California Gold, the first licensed Cal beer, feels like coming full circle. We’re excited to continue this great partnership and to support the campus and the surrounding community.”

Martin and Roy Kirkorian, both co-owners of West Coast Craft, are part of a multi-generational Cal alumni family influential in Berkeley's beer scene. Martin was involved in launching Triple Rock Brewing and Jupiter Beer Garden near campus. Drake’s Brewing previously became the first craft beer sponsor at California Memorial Stadium after renovations in 2012.

Amy Gardner, executive director of University Business Partnerships & Services, explained why Bear Republic was chosen: “Throughout the selection process, Bear Republic Brewing stood out for its overall excellence, including a strong reputation built around community engagement, green practices and a recognized commitment to its craft. These qualities and its strong Cal connections make it an ideal partner to launch the university’s first co-branded beer.”

Proceeds from sales will not only fund general campus initiatives but also support Cal Athletics events such as the Bear Affair Tailgate. Product donations are planned for faculty, staff, alumni celebrations, Cal Performances events, and other cultural programming on campus.
