UC Berkeley increases fall freshman and transfer admission offers amid record applicant pool

More students have been admitted to the University of California, Berkeley’s first-year and transfer classes for fall 2025 compared to last year, according to admissions data released by campus officials. The increase comes as UC Berkeley received a record number of applications for both categories.

This year, 126,798 first-year students applied for admission. Approximately 14,500 were offered admission, which is 787 more than in the previous cycle. Transfer applications also reached an all-time high with 23,277 applicants and more than 5,600 admitted—128 more than last year.

The new data was published in coordination with the University of California Office of the President (UCOP), which released admissions figures for all nine undergraduate campuses in the UC system.

“At Berkeley, we seek to find the most exceptional students wherever they are in the state, country or world, and it’s especially rewarding when we can offer admission to more of these incredible students,” said Olufemi Ogundele, Berkeley’s associate vice chancellor and dean of enrollment.

The increased number of offers corresponds with a rise in available seats: about 350 additional spots for first-year students and 15 more for transfers compared to last year. Officials determine annual targets based on factors such as graduation rates from previous years.

Admitted first-year students this year had an unweighted average GPA of 3.93 (up from last year’s 3.92) and a weighted average GPA of 4.49 (up from 4.47). About 68% are Californians from nearly all counties in the state; one-quarter are first-generation college students; roughly 15% attended under-resourced high schools.

Other characteristics include:

- Gender: Around 56% female; about 1.4% gender nonbinary.

- Age range: Youngest admitted student is 14; oldest is 27.

- Racial diversity: Approximately 26% are underrepresented minorities.

- Top represented California counties: Los Angeles, Orange, Santa Clara, Alameda, San Diego.

- Top states outside California: New York, Washington, Texas, New Jersey, Massachusetts.

- Top countries represented: China, Canada, Korea, India and Saudi Arabia.

Admitted students include individuals who have developed technology solutions addressing housing challenges for low-income families using AI models; co-founded efforts using drone technology to detect land mines; or launched organizations supporting cultural heritage preservation through mentorship and events. Many demonstrated entrepreneurial interests or achievements in public service and athletics at national levels.

Transfer admits averaged a GPA of 3.78 (up from last year's group at 3.76). Over four-fifths are California residents; over two-fifths are first-generation college students; and more than a quarter come from underrepresented minority groups. The youngest transfer admit is age 13; the oldest is age 78.

“Our commitment to California community colleges remains unwavering,” said Ogundele. “We have and will continue to invest in initiatives that seek to bring representation from as many community colleges across the state as possible.”

International student admissions also rose this cycle at both levels. Among first-years offered admission were 1,469 international applicants (compared with about 760 last year). There were also increases among transfer international admits—885 this year versus about 365 previously—as well as higher application volumes overall among international candidates.

Applicants were notified of decisions on March 27 (first-year) or April 18 (transfer). Applications were submitted during late calendar year 2024.
