Washington, May 2, 2025 — On Thursday, Secretary of the Treasury Scott K.H. Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer met with Japan's Economic Revitalization Minister Ryosei Akazawa.

Secretary Bessent expressed positive sentiments about Japan's recent engagement with the United States following meetings with President Donald J. Trump and other U.S. officials. He referenced a productive conversation held the previous week with Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato.

The discussions between the representatives were described as frank and constructive, focusing on fair and reciprocal trade. Secretary Bessent emphasized tariffs and non-tariff measures, the significance of economic security as an element of national security, and other related concerns.

Reaffirming the strong bilateral relationship, Secretary Bessent agreed to commence working-level consultations immediately to build on the day's discussions. Additional ministerial-level meetings are anticipated in the near future.
