UC Berkeley addresses visa revocations impacting students and graduates

In a recent communication, UC Berkeley informed its community about the revocation of visas for six individuals associated with the institution. The message, distributed on April 7, detailed the situation affecting four current and two former students, raising concerns among the campus populace.

While the university has chosen to limit the details released to maintain the privacy of those involved, officials confirmed that they are committed to supporting affected individuals through established procedures for visa revocations.

University Chancellor Richard K. Lyons and Executive Vice Chancellor Benjamin E. Hermalin assured the campus community of their continued dedication to the rights of immigrant and international students, faculty, and staff. "These actions create an uncertain and challenging environment for our campus community," they stated. "Your university supports, without reservation, the right and ability of immigrant and international students, staff, and faculty to participate fully in the campus experience."

The communication also highlighted that none of the visa revocations have led to in-person immigration enforcement on campus, nor are there current plans for such actions.

Those impacted include one undergraduate and three graduate students who are currently enrolled, as well as two recent graduates participating in the STEM OPT program. In response, UC Berkeley is providing them with necessary resources and urging them to seek legal counsel.

The university's International Office uses a proactive approach to offer guidance to international students regarding evolving federal policies. Consistent with privacy policies, details concerning the identities or specific circumstances were not disclosed.

UC Berkeley reiterated its commitment to comply with all applicable laws while upholding its Principles of International Engagement. The community has been assured of timely updates related to federal visa regulations.

"We are committed to doing all that we can to support all members of our community as they exercise their rights under the law," the message concluded, accompanied by a list of resources available to students and staff.
