IBM expands its 'as a service' offerings with new storage and power solutions

IBM has taken a significant step forward in the "as a service" market with its introduction of IBM Storage Ceph as a Service, added to its portfolio of service solutions aimed at easing on-premises infrastructure management. This initiative follows IBM's earlier venture with IBM Power delivered as a service, aiming to offer users a distributed compute platform in various formats with adaptable consumption options.

A study by IDC projects a notable shift in how IT buyers will approach service consumption by 2028, with 80% expected to focus on this model for essential workloads. This trend stems from IT buyers seeking optimized spending, improved operational efficiency, and meeting vital sustainability goals. IBM is focusing on this demand by offering its clients an integrated approach to cloud-based as a service solutions with on-premises systems.

McLeod Glass, IBM Infrastructure's VP of Growth and Innovation Programs, remarked, "The need for seamless, automated operations is an increasing priority as organizations leverage AI capabilities, shift to digital infrastructure, and adopt new delivery models. Delivering IT built on infrastructure as a service is key to unlocking the power of flexibility, speed, and ease of consumption."

IBM's Storage Ceph as a Service simplifies storage management by allowing clients to utilize the cloud-like experience of the unified storage solution on-premises. The service covers the management and upkeep of Ceph clusters, freeing IT personnel to concentrate on critical operational tasks. Sam Werner, VP of IBM Storage Product Management, commented, "With data being the lifeblood of any organization, data storage plays a critical role in every workstream, but it shouldn't be as challenging as it is for IT teams to manage. With IBM Storage Ceph as a Service, we're taking on the headache for our clients, expediting the provisioning and streamlining the management of storage resources."

In addition to storage solutions, IBM continues to enhance its IBM Power services to support business continuity and offer security for clients. The IBM Power Virtual Server Private Cloud, part of the IBM Cloud Catalog, supports major enterprise workloads. National Van Lines, a customer of IBM Power Virtual Server, experienced disruptions due to power outages impacting their servers. They opted for IBM's solution for mission-critical application support, effectively cutting disaster recovery times and reducing IT costs. Greg Moore, VP of IT at National Van Lines, expressed confidence in the solution, saying, "IBM Power Virtual Server is a solid, secured, and reliable solution, so much so that we're now going through the same process with the National Forwarding business unit."

Both IBM Power Virtual Server and IBM Storage Ceph as a Service are structured to diminish operational expenditures through a pay-for-use model. These services aim to prevent resource waste and accommodate scaling needs as business demands shift.
