The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has announced the theme for the redesigned $5 banknote, which will honor the deep connection First Nations peoples have to their land. This decision reflects an effort to recognize the emotional, spiritual, and physical ties that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities maintain with Country.
Assistant Governor Michelle McPhee stated, "The theme encompasses the deep connection First Nations peoples have to the land, the waters and the sky." She further added, "This inspiring theme will guide the creation of an artwork that will feature on the redesigned banknote."
The selection process involved a nationwide campaign resulting in over 2,100 nominations from the public. McPhee expressed gratitude towards all contributors: "We extend our gratitude to everyone who made a submission."
For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, Country represents more than just land; it includes waters and sky as interconnected elements. The imagery on this banknote aims to acknowledge this enduring relationship in various dimensions.
A significant aspect of this theme is recognizing how traditional ecological knowledge aids in environmental conservation. First Nations peoples' role as custodians continues to sustain Country's health. This presents an opportunity for broader Australian society to learn sustainable practices from these original stewards.
The design seeks inclusivity by reflecting diverse First Nations cultures across Australia and acknowledging varied yet connected experiences with Country. It avoids stereotypes while aiming for a hopeful future where these connections are celebrated.
Before finalizing this theme, RBA engaged with numerous First Nations organizations nationwide to encourage idea submissions. A panel including representatives from both RBA and Note Printing Australia selected it.
This new design will replace Queen Elizabeth II's portrait but retain Parliament House on its reverse side while featuring artwork by a First Nations artist aligned with chosen themes.
