From July 24-27, Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen will travel to Rio de Janeiro to participate in a G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting along with bilateral engagements with her counterparts and events on the margins. On July 27, Secretary Yellen will then travel to Belem, Brazil, for a meeting of Amazon basin ministers hosted by the Inter-American Development Bank and events related to Treasury’s international climate efforts.
During the G20, Secretary Yellen aims to further America’s leadership role within the multilateral system, which advances national interests by expanding economic opportunities for the U.S. and its trading partners while fostering cooperation on global challenges. She will engage with counterparts to advance shared objectives such as strengthening the global economy—a significant improvement driven by America's historic economic recovery under President Biden. Efforts will include evolving Multilateral Development Banks, strengthening the International Monetary Fund, tackling climate change, and addressing sovereign debt distress. Secretary Yellen also intends to deepen ties with Brazil.
In meetings with allies and partners at the G20, Secretary Yellen will reiterate America’s commitment to Ukraine and reaffirm efforts by the Biden Administration to provide Ukraine with necessary aid. Additionally, she will coordinate with G20 counterparts on countering destabilizing Iranian proxies and addressing humanitarian and economic consequences of conflicts in the Middle East.
Following the G20 meeting, Secretary Yellen will travel to Belem to deliver remarks on climate change leadership under the Biden-Harris Administration. She will highlight actions taken by the United States alongside partners and allies against this existential threat and emphasize ongoing efforts involving multilateral development banks towards global climate goals. Engagements in Belem include meetings with Amazon basin ministers hosted by the Inter-American Development Bank and a roundtable discussion on regional coordination against illicit finance linked to nature crimes in relation to the Amazon.
