The Yale Peabody Museum reopened its doors to the public after a four-year renovation, offering a transformative experience for visitors. Sofi Robles, a fifth grader, expressed her amazement upon seeing the Brontosaurus skeleton, saying, "I knew dinosaurs were big, but I didn’t know they were that big. I love it!"
New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker highlighted the museum's importance in the community, stating, "It’s an awesome new space that is particularly inspiring because it’s so welcoming to the community." The museum, now offering free admission, aims to make its exhibits accessible to all, with Elicker emphasizing the significance of this gesture.
The renovation, made possible by a generous donation of $160 million, expanded the museum's exhibition spaces and added new classrooms equipped with modern technology. The Peabody now joins other Yale institutions in offering free public admission in perpetuity, reflecting its commitment to community engagement.
Visitors, including long-time museum-goers like Gary and Marcia Coen, were impressed by the updated displays and the dynamic poses of the dinosaur fossils. The educational experience at the Peabody has been enhanced with new exhibits showcasing cultural, anthropological, and scientific collections, as well as contemporary artworks like "Eternal Cities" by artist Mohamad Hafez.
Jim Sirch, an education coordinator at the Peabody, expressed his enthusiasm for teaching visitors in the museum again, calling it his passion. The museum's staff, including Sirch and museum ambassadors, are dedicated to creating an inclusive and engaging environment for all guests.
As the first graders from New Haven's public schools left the museum, Director David Skelly encouraged them to return with their families, stating, "We’re looking forward to seeing you again. Go back and tell your friends that we want you all to visit us."
