VCUarts Alum Emily Herr Brings Vibrant Art to Shafer Court Dining Center

VCUarts alum and muralist Emily Herr has brought a burst of visual flair to the Shafer Court Dining Center at Virginia Commonwealth University. The colorful addition to Richmond's mural scene, spanning two stories, is a celebration of campus life and the shared experiences of those who dine at Shafer.

Herr, who designed the mural, aimed to create something universal yet deeply personal, stating, "Food is universal, but it’s also deeply personal. It brings us together, connects us and creates memories." The mural showcases colorful food and dining elements with the message "see you next time" as a focal point, inspired by the food-rich and culturally diverse VCU community.

The artwork was commissioned by VCU Business Services as part of a broader initiative to revitalize campus spaces and enhance the student experience. Stephen Barr, Ed.D., director of Business Services, highlighted the goal of fostering community and engagement at Shafer Court Dining Center, saying, "We want to create an environment that facilitates easy interaction among students, allowing them to gather, share experiences and form meaningful connections in a setting that is uniquely VCU."

Herr, known for her prominent local work, expressed the surreal experience of seeing her art in a place she frequented as a student, adding a full-circle resonance to her journey from VCUarts student to celebrated artist.

The mural at Shafer Court Dining Center is a vibrant reflection of the diverse VCU community and a testament to the power of art in fostering connections and creating lasting memories.
