Casper Labs, the enterprise blockchain software and services provider, has announced a partnership with IBM Consulting to develop a blockchain-powered solution that aims to improve transparency and auditability in AI systems. By leveraging Casper Labs' blockchain technology and IBM's watsonx.governance, the solution will establish an additional layer for governing AI training data, allowing organizations to track and audit changes made to generative AI models.
The collaboration between Casper Labs and IBM Consulting comes in response to the challenges faced by organizations when training, developing, and deploying generative AI models across multiple entities. As different organizations integrate new data sets or modify the models, their outputs change, and it becomes crucial to track and audit those changes. Blockchain technology can facilitate the sharing of trusted context information via metadata, ensuring that changes to the models are documented while mitigating the risk of intellectual property infringement or unnecessary data sharing.
Casper Labs' solution will be built on Casper, a tamper-resistant and highly serialized ledger, and will leverage IBM watsonx.governance and watsonx.ai to monitor and measure input and output data for training generative AI systems. The Casper Blockchain's hybrid nature and permissioning system will enable organizations to protect sensitive data stored in the solution from external actors. Additionally, the solution will support version control using the serialization capabilities of blockchain, allowing organizations to revert to previous iterations of an AI system if performance issues or biased outputs occur.
Shyam Nagarajan, Global Partner, Blockchain and Responsible AI Leader at IBM Consulting, emphasized the importance of governance in ensuring the efficacy of AI systems. He stated, "An AI system's efficacy is ultimately as good as an organization's ability to govern it. Companies need solutions that foster trust, enhance explainability, and mitigate risk." Nagarajan expressed pride in the collaboration with Casper Labs, as they work together to create a solution that drives transparency and risk mitigation for companies deploying AI at scale.
The new solution aims to assist companies across various industries, including financial services, healthcare, and retail, in deploying AI responsibly at scale. It will offer a Compliance Dashboard for monitoring and managing AI systems, a Quality Control Toolkit for monitoring performance and enhancing transparency, and Version Control capabilities for rolling back to previous iterations of AI systems. Additionally, the solution will include an Audit and Reporting System for capturing context metadata and generating detailed reports.
Casper Labs CEO, Mrinal Manohar, highlighted the limitations faced by organizations in monitoring and reacting to the data feeding AI systems. He stated, "With IBM's help, we're committed to delivering a better way to not only understand why AI systems behave the way that they do but also a clearer path to remediate behavior if hallucinations or performance issues occur." Manohar emphasized the importance of effectively understanding, governing, and reacting to increasingly massive AI training data sets to unlock AI's long-term potential.
The collaboration between Casper Labs and IBM Consulting will result in a solution that provides organizations with the tools and capabilities needed to ensure transparency, auditability, and responsible deployment of AI systems. The solution is expected to be available for clients in beta in the first quarter of 2024 and will be accessible through Casper Labs' channels and the IBM Cloud Marketplace.
