Martin Luther King III, a renowned civil rights activist and global humanitarian, will be delivering the keynote address at the University of Chicago's 2024 MLK Commemoration Celebration. The event, which will take place on January 30 at the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, will be open to the public and will also be webcasted.
King III, the eldest son of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, has dedicated his life to continuing the important work of his parents in the fight for civil rights and social justice. He has been instrumental in promoting human rights, eradicating racism, violence, and poverty, and advocating for voting rights legislation.
The University of Chicago has a rich tradition of inviting speakers who have followed in Martin Luther King Jr.'s footsteps to address the UChicago and local communities. Previous speakers have included former President Barack Obama, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, and Attorney General Eric Holder. It is especially significant that King III will be speaking at the same Rockefeller Chapel where his father made his first major address in Chicago in 1956.
In anticipation of his speech, King III expressed his privilege and honor to be able to walk in his father's footsteps at the University of Chicago. He emphasized the importance of continuing the fight for equality and not letting the dream of his father slip away. He stated, "Today, I return to echo his message that our fight for equality is not over. Sixty years after his 'I Have a Dream' speech, the dream has yet to be realized. We are all holders of my father's legacy. Let us continue to strive for change. We cannot risk letting that dream slip away."
King III has been a prominent advocate for social justice and change throughout his career. He has spoken out on the anniversary of his father's famous "I Have a Dream" address, urging people to continue the pursuit of racial equality. He has also led marches across the country, demanding federal action on voting rights legislation.
In addition to his activism, King III and his wife, Arndrea Waters King, have taken on leadership roles in the Drum Major Institute, a nonprofit organization that aims to advance Dr. King's mission through education, action, engagement with world leaders, and collaboration with socially conscious organizations. They are also partnering with various organizations to empower Black and Brown organizers ahead of the 2024 election.
Following his address at the UChicago commemoration, King III will participate in a discussion with Associate Professor Adam Green, a scholar of African American history. The event will also include opening remarks from President Paul Alivisatos and honor the recipients of this year's Diversity Leadership Awards. The Uniting Voices Chicago will perform at the event.

He emphasized the event's commitment to fostering community engagement, diversity, and inclusion, as well as honoring faculty, students, and staff diversity leaders who advance Dr. King's dream.
In addition to the commemoration, there are other events taking place on campus and in the South Side community to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. These include a community day of service, a daylong reading of MLK's texts, and a community tea and discussion about Dr. King's influence on housing policy in Chicago.
The University Community Service Center is inviting the UChicago and local communities to participate in its annual day of service, focusing on beautification and outreach projects in the community. The Divinity School and the Martin Marty Center are inviting members of the UChicago community to participate in a daylong reading of Dr. King's significant texts. The University Community Service Center is also hosting a community tea and discussion to explore Dr. King's impact on housing policy.
These events serve as important opportunities for the community to come together, reflect on Dr. King's enduring legacy, and continue the important work of promoting equality, justice, and social change.
