UC Berkeley has announced the appointment of Ron Rivera as the general manager of the California Golden Bears football program. Chancellor Rich Lyons revealed that Rivera, a former All-American linebacker at Cal and an NFL player and coach, will assume this newly created position funded by private philanthropy.

Rivera’s role will involve generating new revenue and fundraising opportunities for the team while offering leadership both on and off the field. He will report to Chancellor Lyons, whereas head coach Justin Wilcox will continue reporting to Jim Knowlton, Cal’s director of athletics.

“I am fired up to be coming home,” said Rivera in a press release. “My love and passion for Cal has never changed, and I couldn’t be more excited about the future of our football program.”

Chancellor Lyons emphasized the importance of the football program to both the university and community. “The combination of Ron’s incredible football acumen and his powerful dedication to his alma mater makes him a perfect fit for this new role,” he stated.

Rivera played as a linebacker for Cal from 1980 to 1983 before joining the Chicago Bears, where he contributed to their 1985 Super Bowl victory. After retiring as a player, he spent 27 years coaching in the NFL, including stints as head coach for both the Carolina Panthers and Washington Commanders.

Jim Knowlton expressed enthusiasm about Rivera’s appointment: “To be able to fill this role with someone like Ron Rivera is beyond exciting.” Head coach Justin Wilcox also welcomed Rivera’s involvement: “Ron has a passion for Cal football and loves this university.”

Rivera maintains strong ties with UC Berkeley through various contributions alongside his wife Stephanie, who is involved with several university programs. Both are recognized as Builders of Berkeley due to their significant personal donations.
