Regarding the types of securities held by foreign investors, the survey indicated that long-term debt securities had an original term-to-maturity of over one year. Furthermore, a breakdown of foreign holdings of U.S. securities by country and type of security was provided. For example, as of June 30, 2023, the United Kingdom held $2,627 billion in total U.S. securities, with $1,457 billion in equities, $580 billion in long-term debt, and $554 billion in short-term debt.

In response to the survey results, the next survey will cover holdings at the end of June 2024, with preliminary data expected to be released by February 28, 2025. Complementary surveys measuring U.S. holdings of foreign securities are also being processed, with preliminary results anticipated to be reported by August 30, 2024.
