At IBM Think Riyadh 2025, IBM and Riyadh Air announced the launch of what they describe as the world’s first AI-native airline. The partnership aims to build an airline that operates entirely on artificial intelligence platforms, without relying on legacy technology systems.

Riyadh Air is working with IBM Consulting, which is providing technical expertise and managing collaboration across 59 workstreams and more than 60 partners. These include companies such as Adobe, Apple, FLYR, and Microsoft. IBM’s delivery platform, IBM Consulting Advantage, is being used to implement the airline’s technology strategy.

The collaboration between Riyadh Air and IBM began three years ago. With initial flights already underway and commercial service expected in early 2026, both companies consider this a key milestone.

Adam Boukadida, Chief Financial Officer of Riyadh Air, said: “We had a clear choice—be the last airline built on legacy technology or the first built on the platforms that will define the next decade of aviation. With IBM, we’ve stripped out fifty years of legacy in a single stroke. Riyadh Air isn’t just built for today; it’s built for the future and creating a pathway for many airlines to follow in the years to come.”

Mohamad Ali, Senior Vice President at IBM Consulting, stated: “By embedding AI into the very foundation of its operations, Riyadh Air is setting a new blueprint for what it means to build a modern, adaptive enterprise from the ground up. As a company born in the AI era, Riyadh Air is redefining what’s possible in aviation and it’s been a privilege for IBM to help make that vision a reality.”

The initiative focuses on improving both employee workflows and customer experience by integrating generative AI into daily operations. Employees will have access to an AI-powered digital workplace designed to streamline HR tasks as Riyadh Air expands its workforce over the next year. Cabin crews will use mobile applications supported by agentic AI tools such as IBM watsonx Orchestrate to enhance guest services based on real-time information.

Customer support agents will use AI-enabled voice bots and digital assistants intended to provide more personalized assistance by leveraging contextual data about travelers.

Operationally, Riyadh Air uses an enterprise performance management suite implemented by IBM Consulting that combines financial, operational, and commercial data across departments. This setup automates planning processes like budgeting and forecasting while delivering real-time insights for decision-making purposes.

The airline plans to connect Saudi Arabia with over 100 destinations worldwide by 2030 through continued investment in digital infrastructure and innovation.

Riyadh Air was launched in March 2023 as part of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) portfolio. It positions itself as a full-service carrier focused on sustainability practices and advanced onboard features including next-generation entertainment systems.
