IBM has announced the general availability of its IBM Defense Model, an artificial intelligence tool specifically designed for defense and national security applications. The model was developed in partnership with Janes, a company recognized for providing open-source defense intelligence. By combining IBM’s AI technology with Janes’ domain-specific data, the new solution aims to help agencies make faster and more precise decisions in secure, mission-critical settings.

The IBM Defense Model differs from general-purpose large language models by being optimized for tasks unique to the defense sector. It can be deployed in air-gapped, classified, and edge environments. According to IBM, this approach aligns with their focus on developing smaller, purpose-built AI models that are fine-tuned for specific use cases. The model is based on IBM’s Granite foundation models and is available through the IBM watsonx.ai platform.

“Defense organizations need AI they can trust – solutions that deliver accurate insights without compromising security or ethics,” said Vanessa Hunt, General Manager, Technology, U.S. Federal Market for IBM. “The IBM Defense Model provides a fit-for-purpose capability that accelerates mission planning and enhances operational readiness, while reinforcing IBM’s commitment to responsible AI.”

Some features of the new model include training on military doctrine and Janes’ data to understand specialized terminology and operational context. Unlike other models that rely on memorizing static datasets, IBM’s method focuses on interpreting real-time information from trusted sources to minimize errors and ensure relevance during missions. The technology also supports secured deployment in air-gapped or classified environments.

Blake Bartlett, CEO of Janes, stated: “Our collaboration with IBM brings together Janes trusted defense intelligence and IBM’s advanced AI capabilities. This model helps to ensure defense organizations can access timely, relevant insights in secured environments, helping them make informed decisions with confidence.”

The partnership underscores both companies’ efforts to provide tailored technological solutions for military planning and analysis.
