IBM has declared its plan to invest $150 billion in the United States over the next five years. The intention is to boost the economy and reinforce the company’s global leadership in computing. Included in this investment is over $30 billion earmarked for research and development, which aims to advance IBM’s American manufacturing of mainframe and quantum computers.

Arvind Krishna, IBM’s chairman, president, and chief executive officer, emphasized the importance of technology by stating, “Technology doesn’t just build the future — it defines it.” He highlighted IBM’s longstanding focus on American jobs and manufacturing since its founding 114 years ago. According to Krishna, with this investment, IBM is positioning itself as the center of the world’s most advanced computing and AI capabilities.

IBM, a major technology employer in the U.S., boasts a history of innovation. The company was instrumental in creating data processing systems for the U.S. social security system and contributed to the Apollo Program that landed a man on the moon.

In Poughkeepsie, New York, IBM continues to manufacture advanced mainframes, which are essential to both the American and global economies. These IBM mainframes handle more than 70% of the world’s transactions by value.

The company also operates a leading fleet of quantum computer systems and plans to continue designing and building quantum computers domestically. Quantum computing is seen as a significant shift in technology with potential economic benefits, promising solutions to problems that current computers cannot address. These advancements are expected to enhance American competitiveness, job creation, and national security. IBM’s Quantum Network allows nearly 300 Fortune 500 companies, academic institutions, national laboratories, and startups access to its quantum systems, with over 600,000 active users.

This announcement underlines IBM’s strong dedication to fostering innovation in America and generating new economic opportunities both nationally and globally.
