IBM and Roche have collaborated to develop an AI-enabled solution aimed at assisting individuals with diabetes in managing their condition. The product, known as Roche’s Accu-Chek SmartGuide Predict app, was launched in Switzerland earlier this year. It will be featured as a case study at the Swiss Economic Forum in Interlaken on June 5-6.

The app combines IBM’s technological expertise with Roche’s healthcare knowledge to help users better manage glycemic control through predictive algorithms informed by real-time glucose data. When paired with Roche’s Accu-Chek SmartGuide continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensor, the app offers insights to improve glycemic control and reduce risks of hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia.

Moritz Hartmann, Head of Roche Information Solutions, stated: “By harnessing the power of AI-enabled predictive technology, Roche’s Accu-Chek SmartGuide Predict App can help empower people with diabetes to take proactive measures to manage their disease.” He emphasized the role of cross-industry innovation in addressing healthcare needs and improving therapy outcomes.

Christian Keller, General Manager of IBM Switzerland, highlighted the collaboration’s goal: “The collaboration with Roche underlines the potential of AI when it’s implemented with a clear goal – assisting patients in managing their diabetes.”

The partnership also led to developing a tool that uses advanced technologies like large language models on IBM’s data and AI platform Watsonx. This tool accelerates clinical data analysis by digitizing and categorizing anonymized data linked to CGM readings and daily activities.

Both companies believe these innovations underscore the importance of combining scientific approaches with domain expertise in healthcare and technology for significant advancements.
