Foreign investments in U.S. securities rise to $30,881 billion in June 2024

The U.S. Department of the Treasury has released the final results from the annual survey of foreign portfolio holdings of U.S. securities as of June 30, 2024. The survey, conducted in collaboration with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, valued these holdings at $30,881 billion. This figure includes $16,878 billion in U.S. equities, $12,688 billion in U.S. long-term debt securities, and $1,314 billion in U.S. short-term debt securities.

In comparison, foreign holdings of U.S. securities as of June 30, 2023, were valued at $25,686 billion. This comprised $13,719 billion in U.S. equities, $11,967 billion in long-term debt securities, and $1,186 billion in short-term debt securities. The next survey will cover holdings at the end of June 2024, with preliminary data expected by February 27, 2026.

The primary countries holding U.S. securities include the United Kingdom with $2,946 billion, the Cayman Islands with $2,728 billion, Japan with $2,592 billion, Canada with $2,508 billion, and Luxembourg with $2,329 billion.

The survey is complemented by annual surveys measuring U.S. holdings of foreign securities. Data from the most recent survey for securities held at year-end 2024 are currently under processing, with preliminary results due by August 29, 2025.
